EDINBURG — “The one we’ve deemed a legend.” Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala spoke eloquently of his friend, assistant chief Peter De La Garza who retired Thursday to red, white and blue balloons that surrounded the stage at the Bert Ogden Arena in honor of his 43 years with the department.

Officers shared stories about De La Garza at his retirement ceremony, singing the praises of a man who’s become something of an institution in local policing, and who earned the respect of his colleagues and members of the community in attendance. Some said De La Garza never had a bad day, and was always smiling.

He began his journey in law enforcement on Dec. 18, 1978, at the age of 21 where he worked as a patrol officer until 1981. During this time he was studying at Pan American University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in 1983.

In 1990 he attended the FBI National Academy at Quantico, Virginia, where he graduated from the 163rd session.

Throughout his time as an officer, he moved up the ranks of the department as a corporal, sergeant and lieutenant. In 1994 he was promoted to assistant chief where he oversaw day-to-day operations of the police department and various divisions.

He has led the department as chief in an interim capacity on four different occasions.

De La Garza has inspired many people to pursue a career in law enforcement, including Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra.

Guerra recalled being a sophomore in high school when De La Garza first received his badge. When he decided to join law enforcement he remembered turning to De La Garza for guidance.

“He was one of my mentors. When I first decided to go into law enforcement I reached out to him and he explained the process to me,” Guerra said.

Many of De La Garza’s friends, co-workers, and family filled the area to celebrate and thank him for his four decade career.

“There is not a person that is more deserving of enjoying his retirement,” said Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr., adding that De La Garza has been a dedicated officer that faced challenges without hesitation. “He embodies what Edinburg is about … Honor, integrity and 100% dedication.”

Red and blue lights flashed in front of the stage as a crescendo of cheers and claps echoed through the room as De La Garza made his way onto the stage to address his community.

“I will always cherish the memories and friendships I have made in this career,” De La Garza said with teary eyes as he reflected on his years as a police officer. “It’s been an honor, a joy and a privilege working with the great city of Edinburg.”
