The body of a migrant man was discovered in a Mission canal Monday morning.

U.S. Border Patrol agents based in McAllen made the discovery, according to a statement shared by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

“Local law enforcement agencies were called to retrieve the body who they subsequently pronounced deceased,” the statement read. “This situation is a grim reminder of the danger of making the trek through Mexico and crossing the border through irregular means.”

The canal in Mission that connects to the Rio Grande is often used as an entry point into the United States, but it can prove treacherous when the water turbines are turned on and propel thousands of pounds per pressure.

Mexican identification was found on the man’s body. Border Patrol contacted the Mexican consulate to notify of the death.

The body was taken to a local funeral home.
