Hidalgo County to host first vaccination clinic in Delta Area on Wednesday

Hidalgo County will be hosting a vaccination clinic on Wednesday, but the onsite pre-registration begins from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The community vaccination clinic will be held at the Edcouch-Elsa Benny Layton Memorial Football Stadium, at Yellow Jacket Drive and Mile 17 North in Elsa, according to a news release.

There will be 500 doses of the Moderna vaccine available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Onsite pre-registration begins today, Tuesday, at 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. Those who qualify for the vaccine will be given a bracelet to return to the same location the following day.

People currently eligible to receive the vaccine must be healthcare workers, people 65 years and older, or 18 years and older and have a qualifying chronic medical condition.

Those medical conditions include but are not limited to: cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies, solid organ transplantation, obesity and severe obesity (body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher), pregnancy, sickle cell disease, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 65 years are asked to show up with medications, prescriptions, or a doctor’s note for proof of conditions outlined above.

Attendees are asked to wear short sleeves. The county also requests they take an ID and proof of medical condition like a prescription for a current medical condition, a clearance letter from their physicians, and water and snacks for the extended waiting periods. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed in the clinic.

People who have difficulty walking are allowed to bring only one person to assist them. Those who are pregnant or lactating, have cancer or are undergoing any immunosuppressive treatment or medication are asked to take a doctor’s notice allowing them to receive the vaccine.

Doctors notices must be issued by physicians in the United States.

The clinic will be the first mobile vaccine clinic in the Delta area and is a collaboration between Hidalgo County Precinct 1, the cities of Edcouch, Elsa and La Villa, and Edcouch-Elsa ISD, Monte Alto ISD and La Villa ISD.

“We hope to continue reaching county residents by collaborating with cities and school districts to provide this much needed service,” Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes said.
