The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art is hosting an exhibit “El principio,” which translated to English means “The Beginning,” from local artist Flor Delgado who said her artwork comes from years of painting and reading the bible.
“With all the bad and crazy things happening in this world, I came to the conclusion that there’s always a beginning,” Delgado said.
“So, there’s always a beginning where to always look for good. According to my beliefs, I decided to look for answers in the bible, I was reading passages from where the world began, and I did an interpretation of each biblical verse and created art pieces with my own style.”
The 13 acrylic pieces Delgado is exhibiting have names such as “The chaos” and “The paradise.” Originally from Torreón, México, she said she started painting at her hometown at age 15 and from then, she continued to find inspiration in creating art and eventually became an art teacher herself.
“I believe, and there are a lot of people who will agree this, I believe that the only thing that can help kids to overcome problems is art,” she said.
“Art opens up your spirit, and it doesn’t matter what type of art it is. It can be music, writing, painting, there are so many types of art, so that kids will have something to focus, to concentrate and I think that is something that we have to try to do with kids and adults. Get closer to art so that we can get sensible, because that’s what the world needs, more sensible people.”
The local artist said museums are the most important places to support the arts and hopes more schools create the culture of taking students to visit the museums so that they can have art as part of their life. She said art, in any form, became more important during the pandemic.
“When it comes to plastic arts, going to the museums, or reading written works such as books, that forms you and broadens your perspectives,” she said.
“I see that art became more important during the pandemic, at least a little more. I see that more people got closer to art, maybe because they’re bored, but it helps to broaden your mind and to open up to create more stuff.”
Deyanira Ramirez, executive director at the museum, said she likes the exhibit because it is different from what she is used to seeing. She said throughout the museum, there are different exhibits with different techniques and inspirations from local artists.
