Edinburg man charged with driving 105 mph, trying to escape custody

A Cameron County constable arrested an Edinburg man late Sunday night after he allegedly blew a stop sign driving at 105 mph, and then tried to escape custody.

Fernando Cabrera Jr. is charged with escape and reckless driving.

The Cameron County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office said in a news release Sunday that around 11 p.m. that night, a deputy was conducting traffic enforcement near the intersection of Frontage Road and Farm-to-Market Road 800 in Harlingen.

According to a news release, a deputy observed a white Chevrolet Corvette disregard a stop sign while driving approximately 105 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.  The constable pulled Cabrera over and arrested him on a charge of reckless driving.

“Upon processing the suspect at the La Feria Constables Office, the suspect attempted to escape the building and free himself of the handcuffs. After a brief struggle, the deputy was able to subdue the suspect,” the news release stated.

Cameron County jail records indicate Cabrera received a total of $5,000 in bonds.
