If you love the color purple, you are going to love the newest character added to M&M’s candy.
For the first time in a decade, M&M is not only adding a new color — purple — but a new spokescandy named Purple, who is designed to represent acceptance and inclusivity, the candy company said in a news release.
“Mars is thrilled to debut the newest member of the M&M’S cast of characters to the world. There is so much about our new spokescandy that people can relate to and appreciate, including her willingness to embrace her true self – our new character reminds us to celebrate what makes us unique,” said Jane Hwang, global vice president at Mars Wrigley.
“Our purpose story is just getting started and the introduction of our newest M&M’S spokescandy is the next chapter, as the brand continues to delight fans with fun in a way only M&M’S can,” Hwang said.
Purple will join the other candy colors of red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and brown.
Purple also has a musical video on YouTube where the candy introduces itself to the public. The musical debut entitled, “I’m Just Gonna Be Me” features saxophonist Grace Kelly, dance and choreography masters Devin Santiago and Colo Cag, celebrated opera singer Anthony Roth Costanzo, and special appearances by the rest of the M&M’S crew including Red, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Blue and Green.
According to Candy Industry, M&M’s were the second top candy sold in a bag in 2021 with $568.4 millon in sales. It was the top candy sold in a box with $989.7 million in sales.
The first M&M’s were introduced in the 1940s. The M&M peanuts was introduced in the 1950s. M&M’s started to show up in different colors in the 1990s.
