HARLINGEN — The City of Harlingen announced that Los Garcia Brothers (norteno/conjunto) and The Hot Rods (80’s pop rock and more) will take the place of Mark Chesnutt as the headliners for Harlingen’s Freedom Fest on July 3.

The change comes after Chesnutt was sidelined due to medical reasons. According to his official Facebook page, Chesnutt suffered a back injury and had to cancel several events this week.

The free event also features Lauren Corzine and the RGV Jazz Orchestra as well as a free car show, adult beverage garden, food trucks, and plenty of activities for the kids such as free face painting and balloon caricatures.

The Harlingen Humane Society will also be on hand offering on-site pet adoptions and the Harlingen Health Department will have nurses on-site to administer free COVID-19 vaccines.

Harlingen’s Independence Day celebration will be held at the brand new Lon C. Hill Destination Park on Saturday, July 3.

All the fun starts at 4 p.m. and will culminate at 9 p.m. with a fireworks show.

This is Harlingen’s first event since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and although the scheduled headliner is unable to perform because of medical reasons it was important to continue with the free celebration as planned.

For decades, Freedom Fest has been a staple when it comes to celebrating the 4th of July in the RGV and this time will be no different.
