Eligible students at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will receive $250 starting Monday as part of the Spring Relief Package in an effort to lessen the economic burden the pandemic has brought to their lives.

This semester, students will receive $500 in total as part of the relief. Those who were eligible must have received the first $250 before the spring semester started or throughout the month of January. The second part will be coming next week.

“On the success side of things, we’ve created additional financial aid packages to what we already have in place: it started with Summer Relief, and we have since launched Fall Relief and Spring Relief,” Patrick Gonzales, spokesperson for UTRGV said.

“Those packages are focused on providing our students with additional financial support during a time when many are struggling financially. As you know, we’ve had record-breaking enrollment last summer, last fall and this spring, so we’re thrilled that students are continuing their academic careers and taking advantage of our commitment to safety and success. We don’t want the pandemic to derail our students’ academic journeys, so we will continue to find new ways to support them during this health crisis.”

Gonzales said to be eligible to receive the relief package students must have registered and completed all financial aid requirements by Dec. 18, 2020. The cash grants will be automatically distributed to students by check or direct deposit.

Tori Lozano, a UTRGV student who is eligible to receive the money, said the money has helped her focus more on school by buying the technology she needs and groceries.

“The relief packages I’ve received through UTRGV have helped tremendously,” she said.” Through this, I was able to afford technology that has allowed me to be successful in my online courses, as well as financially by having extra money for groceries. I’ve been able to focus more on school and less on how I would afford to get other items such as books and programs I need to support my education.
