A 17-year-old Weslaco teen wanted by police for the death of a 44-year-old man in 2023 has been arrested after more than a year on the run.

Mauricio Mata is accused of shooting and killing David Silva in rural Weslaco on Feb. 11, 2023. He was 15 at the time.

Mata was booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center Monday, records show.

On the day of the shooting, deputies responded to the 2100 block of Esperanza Street in rural Weslaco a little after midnight in reference to a man with gunshot wounds.

Upon arrival, deputies began life-saving measures but weren’t successful.

Following interviews with witnesses, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Mata.

HSCO had also previously stated that Mata’s brother, who was also a juvenile at the time, was a person of interest.

Mata remains in custody on a $100,000 bond.
