Progreso school board appoints trustee to vacant seat

The Progreso school board accepted the resignation of one of its members last month and quickly replaced him.

Place 4 Trustee Romero Amador resigned because he couldn’t make meetings due to his job, Superintendent Sergio Coronado said Friday, and trustees voted Berenice Martinez in to replace him.

“It was very important for us to have all board members,” Coronado said. “Since we’re about to close the cycle with TEA, I’ve been pushing the board to make sure that we have more hours and that they attend the school board meetings. And due to that situation he decided to step down.”

The board accepted Amador’s resignation on May 2 and held a special board meeting with a public hearing to receive public feedback on filling the position on May 11.

Trustees opted to fill the seat with Martinez.

“One thing they discussed there during the meeting is that she’s a business owner there in the meeting, and the board unanimously voted for her,” Coronado said.

Martinez will serve the rest of Amador’s term before having the opportunity to run for the seat in May 2023.
