San Benito Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club to host Halloween event

SAN BENITO — Although it’s been a year unlike others due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizations in this community teamed up with a goal of enabling children to celebrate Halloween in a fun and safe environment.

The Rotary Club of San Benito and the Chamber of Commerce will host a “Spooktacular Trick or Treat Drive Thru” on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The event is free and will be held at the Bobby Morrow Stadium parking lot from 5:30 to 8 p.m., or until supplies last.

At the event, families will slowly drive through a long series of stations decorated by local businesses, schools and nonprofits while kids safely trick-or-treat from the car window.

“We want them to still enjoy the spirit of Halloween, but in a safe manner,” Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dafne Maldonado stated in an event flyer. “We are proposing a drive thru event by which the children can wear their costumes and receive goodie bags.”

The bags will contain items, such as children’s masks, small hand sanitizer, candies and fruit.

Face coverings are required and all attendees must stay in their vehicle.

According to the flyer, all staff members will wear protective face coverings, even under their theatrical masks.

“Your safety as well as that of our sponsors, performers and staff is our top priority,” the flyer stated. “This experience was designed to meet all local health and safety standards and state regulations.”

Event organizers are inviting Chamber of Commerce members to participate by setting up a station to give goodie bags, assisting with volunteer responsibilities and/or making candy or cash donations of any amount to support the event.

“Stations will be adequately spaced and there is room for only a certain amount of stations,” Maldonado stated. “If you choose to set up a station, please let us know how many bags you can provide so that we can estimate the number of stations that may need to be combined or stand alone.”

Organizers stated that they believe the event is good for the children of the community.

“It is inventive and it will keep the children and their parents safe while enjoying a traditional holiday,” Maldonado stated. “Your participation is very much needed.”
