Port Isabel restricting access so some buildings

PORT ISABEL — City officials are continuing to make adjustments for social distancing to help combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Port Isabel city officials are restricting public access to city buildings now until April 6 or further notice.

The following events will be canceled — Museums’ of Port Isabel Telling Our Stories, Port Isabel Antique and Flea Market and Queen Isabella Market Day.

The city’s library, lighthouse, museums, animal shelter, recycling center, community center, event and cultural center, Keeper’s Cottage/Chamber of Commerce and the Laguna Madre Youth Center will be closed to the public but will still be available by phone or email.

The lobbies of the following departments will remain open during regular business hours, but the offices will be closed to the public — building department, city hall, finance department, economic development department and the municipal court.

Failure to appear in municipal court will be waived now through April 15.

Garbage collection will continue as normal.

Late payment fees for garbage will also be waived now though April 15.

Employees will work in shifts to minimize the potential for disruption in services if an employee is exposed to or diagnosed with the COVID-19.

City employees will continue to provide services by telephone, email, drop boxes and limited building lobby access.

The police department, fire department parks and recreation department, and EMS will continue as normal.

City officials recommend that the public advise dispatch if they have respiratory symptoms, a fever that has persisted or has significant recent travel.

“We urge all residents and visitors to exercise prudence and to use their own personal judgment in conducting the activities of their daily lives,” the announcement states. “The City of Port Isabel salutes all first responders and remains committed to facing the challenges of COVID-19 with steadiness, resolve and actions appropriate to our community.”
