Longtime Harlingen trustee, educator dies

HARLINGEN – Former Harlingen school board member Verna Young died Saturday.

She was 88.

“It is with a truly heavy heart that we share the passing of HCISD’s beloved Verna Young,” read a statement on the Harlingen school district Facebook page.

“With nearly 60 years in education, Mrs. Young was a teacher, principal and Board of Trustee,” read the statement. “There are no words to express the tremendous impact she had on the students, staff and families of our community. She will be missed and forever in our thoughts and prayers.”

Young joined the Harlingen school board in 2001 after retiring from her position as principal of Harlingen High School. She had also served as principal of Bonham Elementary School.

Young stepped down from the school board in January 2016 to care for her health.

“We are very grateful for her service,” Superintendent Art Cavazos said at the time.

“She has been fully committed to the education of all students as an educator and as a trustee,” Cavazos said. “She’s a champion for HCISD students, families and staff.”
