Bonds reduced for RGC man accused in deadly crash

EDINBURG — A Rio Grande City man charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and seven counts of intoxication assault had seven of his nine charges reduced at his bond hearing this morning.

David Garcia Jr., 22, was in the 93rd District Court following his arrest on Aug. 25. He is accused of t-boning an SUV, resulting in the deaths of a 52-year-old woman and a toddler.

The two counts of intoxication manslaughter remained at $50,000 each, but the seven counts of intoxication assault were reduced from $35,000 each to $10,000 cash surety. This reduced Garcia’s bonds from $345,000 to $170,000.

Garcia was arrested by McAllen police after the accident on the 800 block of North 10th Street.

Patricias Vargas, 2, and Alma Patricia Rodriguez, 52, died in the crash, which sent seven others to hospitals with serious injuries.

Garcia was driving on North 10th Street in a black 2008 Chevrolet Silverado when he crashed into a gold 2007 Dodge Durango driven by 30-year-old Luis Andres Cordova.

A Texas Department of Transportation crash report indicates that the toddler killed in the accident was not restrained by a child safety or booster seat and was ejected from the vehicle.

Of the nine people in the vehicle that night, six were not restrained, including Rodriguez, who died; a 1-year-old; 3-year-old; 17-year-old; and a 19-year-old, according to the crash report.
