Agent’s killer sentenced to death

A Cameron County jury has decided a man must die for killing an off-duty Border Patrol agent.

Earlier today, the jury that convicted Gustavo Tijerina-Sandoval of capital murder in the 2014 killing of Agent Javier Vega Jr. sentenced him to death.

The jury also sentenced Tijerina to life in prison for shooting the agent’s father.

Vega and his family were spending the day fishing in Willacy County near Santa Monica Aug. 3, 2014, when Tijerina tried to rob the family.

He shot the agent as Vega’s wife, two of their children and a friend watched in horror. During the trial all of the survivors said Tijerina was the triggerman.

The jury took less than two hours to convict Tijerina and just as little time to sentence him to death.
