Find a ‘dialogue’ of colors in artist’s exhibit

HARLINGEN — Thick black lines race, tumble and twirl through patches of helter skelter blue, red and yellow, invoking something of the mysterious and the playful.

In other works by Humberto Jimenez, roving geometric shapes outlined in black enclose dots splattered across fields of mauve, forest green and canary yellow.

“The dialogue with nature remains from my point of view a condition without which I would not be aware that I am also nature,” says the artist, whose work is on display at Beyond Arts Gallery.

The show opened Friday and will continue through May 18.

The abstract acrylic and oil paintings by the Matamoros artist reveal an unsettling energy with peculiar bubbles shimmering through fields of silver. Blobs, amoebas and microbes wander through the colorful magic inviting viewers to partake in this visual feast of shape and color, joining in this strange and wonderful “dialogue.”

“This dialogue implies an intense communication with the world, which is not carried out only by optical means,” Jimenez says. “The artist is as much a creature of the earth as of the universe, a creature on a star surrounded in turn by stars.”
