On Tuesday night, Brownsville agents responded to a report that silver SUV illegally crossed the Rio Grande into the United States on a makeshift raft, according to a press release.

When the would-be smugglers became aware of the Border Patrol agents, the SUV’s driver made a U-turn and attempted to return to the Rio Grande.

Agents found the SUV stuck near the riverbank and observed two people swimming back to Mexico.

Authorities found 24 bundles of marijuana weighing nearly 600 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $460,000 inside the vehicle, according to Border Patrol.
