Mayor to deliver State of City address

HARLINGEN — Mayor Chris Boswell today is expected to talk about one of the biggest years of his administration.

The Harlingen Rotary Club of Harlingen will host the annual State of the City address at Casa de Amistad, with doors opening at 11 a.m. and lunch served at 11:30 a.m.

Boswell is expected to point to achievements such as the groundbreaking of the $16.7 million convention center, the $4.5 million project to restore the Baxter Building and Cardone Industries’ launch of a $50 million expansion expected to create as many as 750 jobs.

“We’re going to review the year,” Boswell said yesterday. “This is a good opportunity for us to reflect and see how far we’ve come.”

The community is pulling together to pave the way for the future, he said.

“I intend to convey a lot of pride in what our community has done in the last year and talk about the bright future we have in our community,” he said.

In his fourth term in the city’s top elected office, Boswell, an attorney, first won election in 1998, serving as a city commissioner until 2007, when he won the mayor’s seat.

The address is open to the public, with general seating free to residents not buying lunch.
