Lady Hounds look to end season on high note

SAN BENITO — With a pair of highly anticipated games on the horizon, the San Benito Lady Greyhounds are calm before what will be the toughest part of their district schedule.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Lady Hounds take on the Weslaco Lady Panthers tonight at Weslaco and Harlingen on the road Tuesday.

Despite the potential for two losses, there is also the potential to grab two wins and a District 32-6A championship.

“This group has been together for a long time and this is what they have been working for,” said San Benito head coach AbleMoreno. “They have been really working to get to this point and have an opportunity to win a district title. At this point the fatigue of the season comes in but they know what’s at stake and they’re at a state where they feel comfortable, and they know what they are capable of.

“It’s this calmness that they have right now; they just want to play already. The important thing right now, for us and I’m sure for Weslaco, is execution and whoever executes better is going to win the game.”

Both teams will remember the stunning game-winning three-point shot by MikaylaGarcia that knocked off the Lady Panthers in their first meeting earlier this season.

“I think for us the win alleviates the pressure because for the past couple of years we’ve had trouble just trying to compete with them and now we know that we can compete with them,” said Moreno. “I don’t think we feel the pressure because I think that they know we are capable of pulling it off again.

“Coach (Griselda) Fino, from my experience, is very analytical and looks for things in what you do that might be a weakness and then exploit those weaknesses. Because the bottom line is who’s going to hit their shots that night and who’s going to execute and I guess that’s what makes the game fun.”

32-6A PLAYOFF RACE: With two games remaining on the schedule, Weslaco leads 32-6A. The Lady Panthers stand in first place with an 11-1 record with San Benito and Los Fresnos remaining. They can clinch a share of the league title with a win tonight.

The Lady Hounds find themselves in second place, tied with Harlingen at 10-2. The Lady Cardinals play Brownsville Hanna tonight and San Benito on Tuesday at home.

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons sit in the fourth spot at 7-5 with Brownsville Rivera and Weslaco left to play

Harlingen South and Brownsville Hanna are tied for fifth at 4-8.
