SAN BENITO — Twelve new gold jackets will be seen around the halls until graduation.
San Benito High School held its annual Hi-5 jacket presentation this past week.
The students sat in a row with their parents and administration behind them, waiting to be presented with their golden jacket.
One by one, seniors were called up as Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman put the jacket on them.
The prestigious Hi-5 jackets have been around since the 1970s and awards students who have remained at the top 5 percent of their class every semester throughout their high school career.
Principal Henry Sanchez said the color of the jackets purposely stand out from the traditional lettermen.
“There is no other club or no athletic club that is allowed to wear all gold,” Sanchez said. “That is just for our Hi-5 students.”
Lindsey Gore, one of the 12 students, said she could not have done it without the support of her family.
“It’s a really big honor,” Gore said. “We worked so hard for this.”
Gore, who is a part of Master Minds and Mu Alpha Theta, an honor society for mathematics, wants to go on to study biology at the University of Texas at Austin.
Most of the seniors have already sent in their college applications and hope their achievement will aid with their acceptance.
Student Miguel Serrato has applied to several schools including UTRGV and Baylor University.
“It’s exciting,” Serrato said.
His mother, who attended the presentation, said while she wishes her son would talk more, she is proud of him.
“He’s always been like this,” she said. “He’s always tried to do his best.”
