HARLINGEN — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Harlingen Annual Barbecue is set for tomorrow.
“It’s one of our fundraising events,” said Gerald Gathright, program director.
Anyone interested in helping out the kids served by the Harlingen Boys & Girls Clubs and enjoy a plate of brisket can purchase an $8 ticket today at the Main Unit.
“We earmark this money for our academic enhancement programs,” Gathright said. “It provides for our technology equipment and supplies, our food programs and things like that, books, computers, arts and crafts.”
The five units of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harlingen often provide meals for children after school. Staff offer academic tutoring, athletics and other activities to more than 5,000 children throughout the city. Programs such as Triple Play help children improve their math skills, and literacy programs help them with their reading. Sports leagues offer youths the chance to play volleyball, basketball and other games.
These are just a few of the many uses for funds raised by Friday’s barbecue.
“There are so many programs that we do,” said Alma Dones, one of the directors. “This major fundraiser helps fund all of our five Boys and Girls Clubs. It allows us to continue providing services, programs in the five core areas.”
The Harlingen Fire Department will cook the brisket, and plates will also include beans and rice.
“They have to have a ticket when they drive through,” Gathright said. “It’s not an eat-in dinner. It’s pick up and take with you.”
He added, however, those picking up a plate can eat at one of the picnic tables in Lon C. Hill Park across from the Main Unit or under the pavilion if there’s any room.
