Suspects arrested in armed robbery

HARLINGEN — Harlingen police have arrested two women suspected of involvement in an armed robbery.

On Monday at approximately 2:40 p.m., Harlingen police officers responded to the 3500 block of West Business 83 in reference to a vehicle accident.

As officers were responding to the scene, dispatch received additional calls of a woman with a gun at the location.

According to the victim, a woman identified as Denise Gina Cantu, 38, of Harlingen, and another woman assaulted her at the location and stole her cell phone, police said in a statement.

During the assault, Cantu’s accomplice allegedly pointed a handgun at the victim, threatening her life, police said in the statement. A man witnessed the assault and attempted to intervene, but was also allegedly threatened with the handgun, police said.

Police said Cantu and her accomplice fled the scene in a white Toyota Tundra in an unknown direction of travel.

An arrest warrant for Cantu was issued charging her with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

Police said Cantu was found yesterday at her residence, along with 26-year-old Monica Escobedo. “The investigation revealed that Escobedo was the second female involved in the alleged robbery and assault,” police said in the statement.

Both were taken to the Harlingen City Jail without incident, police said.
