HARLINGEN — “Let’s go Cardinals,” shouted a group of basketball players in the back of a truck.

Crowds cheered as the Lady Cardinals basketball team passed in front of Harlingen High School last night on the way to the pep rally to get psyched for tonight’s homecoming game with Rivera High School.

The parade also included members of the Key Club, JROTC and other student organizations.

The Dazzlers in red sequined skirts from Bonham Elementary School marched by, along with the Cardinal Band. Young children rushed into the street in a mad scramble for candy tossed from passing vehicles.

“The kids love it,” said Bethany Prechel, a fourth grade teacher at Bonham.

She and her husband James watched with delight as their two children, Ethan and Emma, dove for candy. They also were supporting a nephew on the football team.

Krystal Garcia also was supporting her young relatives in different organizations.

“It’s amazing, the way Harlingen comes together,” said Krystal as her son Adam, 4, waited for another shower of candy to land in the street.

“I have nieces and nephews,” she said, adding some are also on the varsity football team.

“They enjoy being a part of it,” she said, watching the parade pass.

Soon, the varsity football team rode by in full regalia. In the last twilight they could be seen waving colorful flags in eager anticipation of the game.
