The rain that dampened parts of Brownsville and Cameron County Wednesday morning was primarily beneficial and part of a pattern that could continue through early next week, the National Weather Service said.

Brownsville received 3/4 of an inch of rain, while Harlingen got .18 of an inch in thunderstorms that hit between 8 and 9 a.m., said Chris Birchfield, a meteorologist at the NWS office in Brownsville.

A mid-level disturbance in the atmosphere provided a focus that when combined with tropical moisture near the surface led to the storms, Birchfield said. He added that the mid-level disturbance provided lift, making the storms possible.

The storms were confined to the coastal counties along U.S. Highway 77 heading toward Corpus Christi.

“You had showers moving quickly, so it’s pretty beneficial rain,” he said. “The main threat was lightning.”
