HARLINGEN – The numbers are in, and they look pretty good.
Bicycle World RGV presented a $31,000 check yesterday to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harlingen. Bicycle World raised the money at the 27th Jalapeno 100 in February.
About 850 people from the Valley, throughout Texas and other parts of the country gathered to ride their bicycles on routes of varying lengths.
Lupita Muniz, Lynn Johnson, Henry Roberts, Gerald Gathright, Rick Seija and Ana Adame were the movers behind the event.
“This is really important for us,” said Gathright, director of the Harlingen Girls and Boys Clubs.
“It will be going into our summer programs at all five units,” he said.
Muniz is the chief volunteer officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harlingen.
Lynn Johnson sits on the board of directors. Seija is a sales manager at Bicycle World at 1113 S. 77 Sunshine Strip.
Ana Adame is director of operations for Bicycle World RGV, which sponsored and organized the ride.
Summer programs will offer kids a place to challenge half pipes with their skate boards, practice their layups on basketball courts, and play kickball.
They’ll also enjoy the use of computers and game rooms and a free lunch.
Bicycle World began donating all of its Jalapeno 100 funds to the Boys & Girls Clubs several years ago.
“I didn’t really know about the Boys & Girls Clubs at first,” said Bicycle World owner Henry Roberts.
“People were telling us how important it is,” he said. “They have a sense of belonging.”
