SAN BENITO — A waterline break cut service to residents on Poinciana Street yesterday afternoon.
Crews were working to repair the break, city spokeswoman Martha McClain said.
It was unclear if water was cut off to Dr. Cash Elementary School and Miller Jordan Middle School, both located on Poinciana.
A resident said she noticed water cut off before noon.
At about 3 p.m., brown water poured from her faucet.
It was unclear whether water service was restored late yesterday afternoon.
The water break was not related to the city’s water plant.
The city continues to work on a $3 million project aimed at renovating the 90-year-old water plant.
On Jan. 8, the city’s water plant shut down, cutting off water across town and leading the city to use Harlingen water to serve customers.
Yesterday’s incident appears to have been caused by a waterline break.
In a report, city consultant Lou Portillo said “freezing” temperatures created condensation which froze water in the plant’s air line, creating a leak that dropped the system’s water pressure Jan. 8.
Portillo recommended the city install heaters and insulation to protect equipment in the event of cold temperatures.
The city has implemented Portillo’s recommendations to ensure freezing would not cause another shut down, city spokeswoman Martha McClain said.
