Not so ‘jolly’ Saint Nick

HARLINGEN – Santa Claus is coming to town. Or is he?

The man is passing kidney stones, so he isn’t in the jolliest of moods. Which of course makes for a much more believable Santa, played by Austin Fitzgerald in the play “Christmas Belles.”

Fitzgerald and about 10 other actors have spent the past six weeks preparing for the play which opens tomorrow at the Harlingen Community Theater.

“It’s been pretty fun,” said Fitzgerald, 27.

“My character is in pain most of the time, so I don’t have to be so jolly,” said Fitzgerald, of Harlingen.

The play is about a small town presenting a Christmas pageant, but it’s full of all sorts of discord. It’s anything but jolly, but that’s what makes it fun. Everybody seems to have fun in spite of it all.

“It’s a great show,” said T.J. Faver, director.

“There are three sisters,” Faver said. “One of them is pregnant, one is divorced and has a bad reputation and wants to get back in good graces. One burns down her boyfriend’s trailer. There’s another sister nobody knew about.”

Dysfunctional? Really?

It could be said this show is actually a “show about a show” revealing the realities of such an endeavor.

QUOTES FROM THE PLAY

Geneva: This is BooKoo BoKay. Whether you’re sayin’ “Get well Soon,” “I do” or “I’ll never touch that woman again,” say it with flowers.

G.J. Aunt Honey: This might be easier if we focus on men you haven’t had a little flirtation with.

Honey Raye: Then I’m going to need time to come up with somebody.

G.J.: When they asked me to give that demonstration last night at the Bi-Annual Cow Insemination Workshop, why, halfway through my demonstration I just froze. I didn’t know which end was up. Even the cow felt sorry for me. I could tell by the look on her face when she turned around to see what was happening.
