‘Meditations’ by local artist focus on peace, love

HARLINGEN — She sits in a moment of quiet meditation, quiet eyes narrow in closing, bright colors conveying a passionate peace.

The woman in the painting, “day meditation dream at night,” communicates very well Wilma Langhamer’s message of love and peace.

“It’s my favorite,” said Langhamer, 74, whose exhibit “MEDITATIONS” opened last night at Beyond Arts Gallery.

“I’m meditating myself quite a bit and I’m a dreamer,” said Langhamer, who immigrated from Germany in the late 1970s.

She’d wanted to live in New York. However, her husband, Carl Mohner of Austria, needed the Valley’s subtropical climate for health reasons, so they settled in the McAllen area.

“I’m happy here,” she said. “Texans are very friendly.”

So have they been toward her work, both here and in far away places. The paintings at the gallery reveal bold colors which, curiously, offer a calming effect to the viewer. This could be, at least in part, because of the subject matter.
