Pigskin back at Boggus Stadium

HARLINGEN — Ouch … There’s a dull ache creeping into your fingers as they move through the keys.

Things were fine at first, but the tempo picked up just a bit. You can feel the pain in the music itself, sort of a stirring and unsettling, a nervousness encroaching on the performance.

The musicians at Harlingen High School South have just played a musical version of water turning to steam. It’s part of their show, “H20” the marching band will perform tomorrow night at the 74th Annual Pigskin Jubilee.

And there’s no question, everyone’s excited about performing tomorrow night, even more so considering this is the first time in many years the event will be held at Boggus Stadium.

Ronnie Rios, director of music for the Harlingen school district, said Pigskin, more properly known as Region 28 UIL Marching Band Contest, has been held in Donna or San Benito for years.

“What I did was I talked to my supervisors and asked them if they’d be in support and they were all in favor,” Rios said.

The suggestion was put to a vote in May and band directors approved.

So does everyone else. A total of nine bands from 6A schools will perform beginning with Weslaco East High School at 6:45.

Harlingen High School, where Rios is also band director, will perform at 7 p.m. The students have been perfecting a show called “The Fall of Rome.”
