Traffic stop in San Benito leads to $180,000 drug seizure

Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies seized more than $180,000 in cash today during a traffic stop just south of San Benito.

Sheriff Omar Lucio revealed the details of the investigation during an afternoon news conference.

Lucio said 35-year-old Guillermo Perez gave conflicting stories when he was questioned by deputies during a traffic stop near FM 732 and Interstate 69/Expressway 77/83.

The sheriff said a canine discovered several bundles of money hidden in the backseat of the vehicle. The cash totaled $180,780.

The sheriff said investigators believe the cash is laundered money.
