Different Dixie ‘chicks’

HARLINGEN – What do you get when you combine an ill-tempered lawyer, a sweet people pleaser and a seductive young hottie in the same bowl?

Quite a colorful mix. Add to that a woman who’s constantly cracking jokes and another who was captain of their swim team. Now you have an entertaining comedy called “The Dixie Swim Club” opening tonight at the Harlingen Performing Arts Theatre.

“I am always having problems,” said Vernadette, played by Kate McSwain.

“I’m always complaining about my life,” she said. “The kids are always in trouble.”

The Dixie Swim Club by Jamie Wooten, Jessie Jones, and Nicholas Hope tells the story of five Southern women – played by five Harlingen women – who met while on the same swim team. They meet each August in North Carolina’s Outer Banks to play catchup.

“They come in from different jobs,” said Director Joel Brotzman-Gonzales. “Working with all these ladies has been tremendous.”
