HARLINGEN — Officer Charles Duhamel is a hometown hero. But now, he’s a Texas hero, too.
Gov. Greg Abbott honored Duhamel with the Star of Texas Award, one of the state’s highest honors presented to police officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.
Abbott presented Duhamel and 56 other recipients with the award Tuesday after Duhamel, his wife Meranda Marie and Police Chief Jeffry Adickes traveled to Austin.
Officials have urged Duhamel to tell his story.
But the nine-year veteran of the department declined comment.
Adickes said Duhamel, 30, risked his life to protect his fellow officers.
“As a citizen of Harlingen and as a member of the Harlingen Police Department, I could not be more humbled by Officer Duhamel’s bravery, sacrifice and commitment to his fellow officers and the citizens of Harlingen,” Adickes said yesterday in a statement.
