Young SEALs: Children learning how to be swimming competitors

HARLINGEN — “Awesome,” shouted Eric Rudd as one of his young swimmers dove into the pool.

The gleeful shouting of children echoed across the indoor pool at the Harlingen school district’s Aquatic Center on North 77 Sunshine Strip.

The first day of workouts for the new SEAL Team and the “SEAL pups” had just begun. The children who’d signed up for the program moved up and down the lanes, each using his or her preferred stroke.

“I love getting in the water,” said Harlow Fields, 10. “It’s just in the workout.”

Her favorite move is the back stroke.

“I love the speed of it,” said the Treasure Hills Elementary fifth grader.

The new SEAL Swim Team — Safely Educating Aquatic Learners — is an extension of the 2nd Grade SEAL Program begun last year to teach all second graders in the district how to swim.
