Harlingen Medical Center holds groundbreaking for new ER, labs

Harlingen Medical Center broke ground Wednesday for the expansion of its emergency room. The work will take about 22 months and cost $9 to $15 million.

The expansion will add 14,800 square feet of space to the ER. The facility currently has 10 beds and the expansion will add 14 more. The ER currently employs about 50 medical personnel. HMC will also hire about 15 more nurses for the facility, plus six to eight techs and four more unit clerks.

Expansion of the ER will also allow for the expansion of several departments, including the cardiovascular center and the radiology and imaging department. The operating room will also have more space. These additional expansions will add up to an extra 12,000 square feet.
