HARLINGEN — Everyone cheered as Daniel Moreno ran toward the purple arch marking the finish line.
“It was hard but it was worth it,” said Moreno, 22, sprawled on the grass after a volunteer hung a medal around his neck.
The 3rd Annual Harlingen Medical Center and Texas State Technical College Community Health Walk/Run 5k/1 mile was held yesterday on the TSTC campus. The event was held to raise money for the HMC Scholarship Endowment, said Manny Chacon, regional director for business development and marketing.
“It’s going really well,” Chacon said. “We had more than 172 register for the event. It’s for scholarships here at TSTC.”
He speculated the event had raised at least $10,000.
Lisa Henderson ran the first event three years ago. As she stopped to cool down after crossing the finish line, she spoke about the event both then and now.
“It was good,” said Henderson, 34, of Santa Rosa.
“It’s a little bit better than the first one,” she said. “I didn’t do bad. I feel I’ve been trying a little bit, and I’m better than last time.”
Daniel Guerra arrived at the finish line soon after Moreno.
“I’m pretty tired,” said Guerra, 19, heaving to catch his breath.
“I just wanted to see how far I can go,” he said.
The event also offered screening for blood pressure, blood sugar, and vision.
