HARLINGEN — The school year may be winding down, but the district’s jazz musicians are on a roll.
Jazz bands from HarlingenHigh School and Harlingen High School South will compete today in the 16th Annual RGV Jazz Festival. The event, which is free and open to the public, is being held at the Harlingen school district’s Performing Arts Center at 3217 W. Wilson Road. It will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through the afternoon.
The festival is being hosted by Ronnie Rios, band director at HarlingenHigh School.
“I’m putting it together to give an opportunity to schools that are here in the Valley,” Rios said. “That way they don’t have to pay so much money for travel expenses.”
Rios may have been referring to the four jazz bands from HHS who traveled earlier this month for the 49th AnnualTexasA&M University–Kingsville Jazz Festival.
Those bands, as well as jazz groups and a newly-formed salsa band from Harlingen High School South, did extremely well.
Three Harlingen South jazz bands earned second place in their classifications. Three students were selected for the All-Star Jazz Band: Ryan Mowers, senior, a trumpet player; Cole Allex, senior, alto saxophone player; and Mathew Gonzalez, junior, bass trombone player.
