Hidalgo County is extending its operating hours at WIC clinics throughout the area beginning in October.

GRANJENO — The stench of smoke was pungent in Granjeno Friday morning after multiple fire departments and agencies combated a grassfire that, according to Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Homero Garza, was 95% contained by 8 p.m. Thursday night.

The city of Palmview approved Tuesday a resolution supporting the Texas Education Agency’s recommendation to intervene at La Joya ISD, although the city says it expects to face pressure from the district for doing so.

The Texas Education Agency on Wednesday posted candidate applications for a board of managers at La Joya ISD, moving the district closer to state intervention that it plans to oppose.

Hidalgo County’s Precinct 3 office said Wednesday that it has finished clearing the debris left in the wake of the April 28-29 storm that brought with it hurricane-force winds and left widespread damage in the region.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened in Sullivan City at approximately 10 p.m.

The charges against a former Sullivan City police chief were ultimately dropped Wednesday after seven years since his initial indictment.
