There were a number of eye-popping offensive outbursts in Week 2 from East Valley teams and players.
The Harlingen South Hawks (2-0) continued to put the Rio Grande Valley on notice with a 64-0 victory over Sharyland Pioneer. The Hawks have scored 98 points through two contests and debuted in the RGVSports.com top 10 poll at No. 7 after showing off their revamped offense.
Senior quarterback Xander Casarez was 7-for-9 with 120 yards and two touchdowns in the air against the Diamondbacks. Six different Hawks notched one rushing touchdown in the onslaught, and junior Carlos Mossboss led the ground game with 120 yards on seven carries. Harlingen South accumulated 461 total yards of offense in the blowout.
Rio Hondo’s offense has also lit up the scoreboard during the opening weeks of the 2021 season. The Bobcats (2-0) defeated PSJA Memorial 49-6 on Friday, bringing their season points total to 114 through two weeks.
Senior running back Ethan Jeradiah continues to lead the effort, rushing for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries in Week 2 and hauling in another touchdown with 80 yards receiving. Senior quarterback Zechariah Rios threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns as the Bobcats racked up 550 yards of offense. Senior receiver Tomas Arredondo had three receiving touchdowns on five catches for 110 yards.
The Brownsville St. Joseph Bloodhounds (1-1) bounced back from a Week 1 loss with a 38-14 victory over Santa Rosa. Senior quarterback Luigi Cristiano had a stellar performance, throwing six touchdown passes and 375 yards. Receiver Nick Jackson had nine catches for 187 yards and five touchdowns.
The Lyford Bulldogs (2-0) made their debut in the top 10 poll at No. 9 after their 45-26 defeat of La Villa. Lyford has scored 40 or more points in both of its games so far this season.
Junior quarterback Osmar Martinez was 7-for-16 with 152 yards, two passing touchdowns and one interception in Week 2. He added 201 yards and three scores on the ground. Senior receiver Justin Vela continues to be the top target in the passing game after a 103-yard, one-touchdown outing. Vela has more than 300 yards receiving this season.
Brownsville Hanna’s Kriz Pena had a huge offensive performance in Week 2. Pena, a junior running back, led Hanna’s comeback victory over Sharyland High with three touchdowns — all scored during the second half. He rushed for 353 yards on 36 carries and had an 83-yard touchdown run.
Brownsville Rivera (1-1) battled in a one-possession game for the second straight week, and this time the Raiders picked up a hard-fought 26-24 victory over Edinburg High. Quarterback Ramsey Rocha notched three touchdowns to lead Rivera to victory.
