Mission High senior safety Luis Briseño is The Monitor’s Player of the Week after delivering a lights-out defensive performance during the Eagles’ 13-12 Week 1 win over crosstown rival Mission Veterans last Thursday in Hidalgo.

Briseño came away with three key interceptions to lead the Eagles’ defense, which limited the Patriots to two touchdowns. Each interception swung the rivalry game’s momentum in Mission High’s favor. He also tallied four tackles and contributed on the offensive end with two receptions for 44 yards.

Next for Briseño and the Eagles is another non-district matchup against Weslaco High (0-0, 0-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo.
