LOS FRESNOS — Sixth-grader Victor Alanis lived his dream this week when he stepped on the field at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.

Elementary school children, middle schoolers and upcoming freshmen received instruction and attention from the Los Fresnos coaching staff and a couple of current Falcon football players during a three-day football camp.

“It has been great, because you get to learn a lot more about football,” Alanis said. “These past three days, I have learned more than the other schools that I have been to.”

Los Fresnos athletic director and head football coach David Cantu said at one point Alanis was the only one to step up and do a certain task put before those attending the camp.

“The coaches here at Los Fresnos are nice and explain the game really well,” Alanis said. “They know how to control the kids and put us in the right positions, like the linemen, they told us the right positions. The school I go to does not even do that. The coaches here at Los Fresnos help us.”

The camp had more than 200 participants split between two sessions. The participants went first, then the teenagers.

“Any athletic camp for the kids is good for the community,” Cantu said. “It is good for the football program. The kids get to do football drills and get a little taste of it.”

As soon as the children stepped on the field, it was all smiles.

“The enthusiasm the kids have,” Cantu said about his favorite part of these camps. “They have such a young innocence and excitement about them. It just rubs off of on everybody. It is really a lot of fun.”

After the drills, campers played a variation of football where everyone throws the ball, has the opportunity to be a receiver and score a touchdown.

Brownsville St. Joseph will hold a similar football camp in July.
