Early voting begins for local elections in Hidalgo County

The first day of early voting for the May 6 local entities election saw a slight uptick in voters when compared to the last local entities election in 2021.

Polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, and 1,563 ballots were cast at the 24 voting locations throughout Hidalgo County.

The 1,563 total ballots included 1,448 in-person ballots and 115 mail-in ballots.

For comparison, the 2021 local election drew 1,191 ballots at six polling locations on the first day of early voting, including 1,122 in-person ballots and 69 mail-in ballots.

This year features some hotly contested races for local municipalities including Pharr, McAllen, San Juan, La Villa, Mercedes and Peñitas, as well as races for local school boards including McAllen ISD, Sharyland ISD, and Donna ISD.

Voters will also decide a proposition to allow Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1, to issue $195 million in bonds and levy taxes to fund improvements to the district’s storm drainage system.

Early voting will continue through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They will continue Monday, May 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The last day for early voting will be Tuesday, May 2, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All polls will be closed Sunday, April 30.

Election day is Saturday, May 6. Voters will be able to cast their ballots between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. that day.
