ROMA — Leticia Garza-Galvan, the Roma ISD school board president, has announced she is running to become the next county judge for Starr County.
Garza-Galvan said her decision to run came after receiving calls from people throughout the county urging her to run for the position.
She decided to go for it after conferring with her family but said it was difficult decision to make considering the financial state of the county.
“We have over $25 million in the general fund plus another $11 million in an additional construction fund and of course working with that $60 million budget so, you know, I was in a very secure place,” she said referring to the school district. “(The county) is more of a challenge but I’m up for challenges; that’s what I like.”
Garza-Galvan was appointed to the board in 2011 and was voted to remain on the board in the November 2013 elections.
She currently runs a speech and occupational clinic that she opened in August 2009. Before that, she worked for the school district while also doing contract work after school.
She said she’s wanted to serve in public office since she was just girl and held class office almost every year since sixth grade.
In her latest run for office, she will be facing off against current County Judge Eloy Vera who is in his 19th year in office.
Regarding how she will approach the office, she said the county needed to get the right people and give more opportunities to young people.
“We have a lot of young people out there that are willing and wanting to serve in all these different committees whereas now we have the same people serving over and over,” she said, adding that there is a lot of talent coming out of their schools.
“We need those young people coming in and we need them to participate and we need them to be focused,” she said. “And I think that the fact that they’ll be considered will really, really show something big for Starr County.”
