Letters: Cruz bashed

The March 5 issue of the newspaper carried an article describing demands by Sen. Ted Cruz that Dr. Anthony Fauci be prosecuted for promoting public health policies “… encouraging closure of schools and businesses and prodding Americans to wear masks and get vaccinated.” Surely Mr. Cruz is aware that the measures advocated by Dr. Fauci during the pandemic were effective and necessary for minimizing the spread of a very dangerous virus.

It is also hypocritical for Mr. Cruz to speak out as he has against Dr. Fauci. What makes the senator’s hypocrisy clear is that he himself is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Cruz apparently has chosen to speak out against Dr. Fauci because he knows it will allow him to curry favor with the Trump base. Sen. Cruz is a dishonorable and disingenuous opportunist. Please help vote this man out of office.

On May 1, 2021, a term-limit charter amendment referendum was held with 4,254 votes for term limits out of 99,607 registered voters and a population of 187,231 in the city of Brownsville. Our city is dying when only 4,254 voted for the charter amendment and I am sure the majority did not fully understand how this would allow special interests to control our city government.

I urge all voters to vote against the new proposed charter amendments this coming May 6 election. Vote no! They cannot be trusted!

On Dec. 11, 2022, and Jan. 9, 2023, I wrote letters stating my intent to file for a place on the May 6 mayoral ballot and asked the city’s legal opinion on the qualifications to get on the ballot and if the city intended to apply the 2021 term limit amendment 32 years retroactively to 1991 to disqualify me. The city never responded. Why?

On Feb. 16 I got two calls from the city stating I did qualify and to wait for their call to pick up the letter as a qualified candidate. Then at 4 p.m. I got another call stating that I was being disqualified, which was on the eve of the deadline to file for a place on the ballot.

This obvious fraud to disqualify my candidacy for mayor was purposeful and makes the mayoral election illegitimate. I have the right to run for mayor and the voters have the right to vote for a mayor of their choice, not a choice forced upon them by a corrupt city administration.

The city’s notice to disqualify is 68 days after my first letter to the city in their hope no court would hear the merits for me to stay on the ballot before printing, which is how they have stolen this election! They denied me the vested right to run by retroactively applying term limits 32 years back, which is ridiculous.

I have always fought for the citizens of Brownsville and I will continue to do so. Now, I urge my supporters to protest the May 6 mayoral election. Let’s call this protest vote a recall to anyone elected mayor based on the fraud denying citizens the right to vote for a mayor of their choice. Write my name, Pat Ahumada, for mayor on the ballot in protest to their shenanigans. Do vote for commissioners for District 2 and at large by voting against special interest candidates connected to John Cowen Jr. and Jessica Tetreau. Please share! Protest!
