Letters: Republicans draw criticism

Republicans are running a massive flip-flam operation. They keep a gullible citizenry in a state of frenzied chaos with a fake agenda while they implement the only issue of real importance to them: preventing Congress from addressing America’s massive wealth gap.

Republicans stir up the public pot, demanding information about gender treatments at hospitals and critical race theory curriculum in the schools. They feign super-interest in elections irregularities, Ukraine expenditures and spy balloons. Having a marginal interest in gun control and abortion, they fan those flames into monstrous conflagrations as if resolution of them were the only thing important in life.

They launch investigations of the Justice Department and FBI. They shed alligator tears over Hunter Biden’s business dealings and laptop. They dress down the whole Afghanistan withdrawal process and bemoan the China COVID connection.

Republicans act like screeching monkeys swinging from branch to branch, warning all in their path that “the Democrats are coming, the Democrats are coming.” And a fine paycheck they earn for their award-level performances — gold toilets to sit down on forever.

When will they ever learn? The Republican National Committee just reelected Trump favorite Ronna McDaniel to a fourth term as their chair. Strategies for the 2024 campaign were published almost immediately:

1) No endorsement of the Voting Rights Act. Instead, increased efforts at maintaining “voter integrity,” which really means keeping it “White” to the extent possible, in favor of the most repressive voting laws across the nation (especially but not only in Texas.) This is ostensibly to preclude “rigged elections,” which really means trying once again to rig the next election in favor of Republicans.

2) A doubling down on the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, including, in an attempt to enforce a nationwide ban, outlawing the pills that make it possible to avoid medical intervention; birth control is pending.

3) No national police reform or even minimal gun control such as a ban on assault weapons, generally the arms of choice in mass shootings.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch — or maybe that should be the “funny farm” that has become the House of Representatives now that it is under Republican control, except that there’s nothing amusing about it.

The politics of revenge is revving up, with investigations, subpoenas and possible impeachments moving to the front burner. But it seems too few Republicans watched the presentations by the Jan. 6 committee. In comparison to the integrity and professionalism demonstrated there, this is amateur hour run by clowns whose own witnesses contradict their conspiracy theories. For instance, far from censoring free speech from the right, staff from Twitter averred it was Trump who pressured the platform to suppress content from the left. The Democrats made mincemeat of Chairman Jim Jordan, et al., who showed up unprepared with only the slightest scintilla of evidence.

Little governance or legislation in sight, of course. Around the country, you can almost hear the chortles coming from the Democrats laughing all the way to 2024: You go, guys!

Just making it easier for us to win the next round.
