Letters: Budget bill evaluated

Budget bill evaluated

For months, I have spoken out about this dysfunctional process that has left Congress with two bad choices after completely disregarding the regular appropriations process. This last-minute funding bill was negotiated behind closed doors by the Democratic leadership, and despite their unilateral authority to set the schedule they have failed in one of the most basic responsibilities. This is not what responsible governing looks like.

However, the consequences of a government shutdown directly impact our national and economic security at a time when our country cannot afford that type of disruption. This legislation supports the important missions of our military, border security and national defense as well as the brave men and women behind them.

The Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill:

1. Strengthens national security with a 10% increase in defense spending, including a 4.6% pay raise for our troops as well a $315 million investment to upgrade and improve military facilities in Texas.

2. Supports border communities in Texas that absorb the costs from the surge of illegal immigration by directing $800 million to the Federal Emergency Management Administration to compensate these communities.

3. Provides funding for Border Patrol, including an increase of 300 new agents.

4. Enhances security at ports of entry by providing $70 million for advanced security screen technology to help crack down on illegal border crossings.

5. Supports rural Texas communities and Texas’ robust agriculture industry with $3.7 billion in disaster assistance made available for Texas farmers, ranchers and producers affected by an unprecedented drought.

6. Invests in school safety with $216 million in federal grants and national initiatives to curb school and neighborhood violence.

7. Allocates $4.2 billion for the F-35 program, supporting manufacturing and jobs at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth.

8. Provides $1.61 billion in the IMPACT Act for local school districts with military instillations or federal land.

9. Supports and funds laws I introduced and passed to support victims of crime and abuse, including the Debbie Smith Act reauthorization, PROTECT Our Children Act, Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, Abolish Human Trafficking Act, and the SANE Act.

America

is great

Ms. Coronado wants to make America great again. Other than Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and the anti-American Republicans, who says America isn’t great? MAGA means America is not great.

Is she referring to the 1930s, when the Christian Front, led by Father Charles Coughlin, was demanding an end to American democracy and installing a fascist government with a dictator like Adolf Hitler? Coughlin had millions of followers of his daily radio show.

Hitler and Benito Mussolini were very popular among conservatives in the USA. Wall Street money tried to hire Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler to recruit World War I vets to overthrow the USA and install a fascist state in the USA. Butler received two congressional Medals of Honor and the Marine Corps Brevet Medal during his 34-year career. He revealed the plot to FDR and when the press found out, a congressional hearing was held.

Exposing the people and money involved could have caused a total collapse of Wall Street finance and destroy the U.S. economy. Congress hid the report and lost the paperwork.

Every person who supported the overthrow of the USA on Jan. 6, 2021, were MAGA Republicans. From the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas to Republican governors, congressmen, Cabinet members, state officials and the violent crowd were all MAGA Republicans.

If MAGA succeeds America will be a fascist state. Is that what you want, Ms. Coronado?
