Time to get to work

On Nov. 8, the constituents of Texas’ 15th Congressional District elected me as their next congresswoman. After more than a year of campaigning, listening to the grievances of my community and putting together a plan to better my district, I am ready to get to work.

I’m a small business owner, a single mother and a proud South Texan. The community I am so honored and privileged to serve is a place I have called home since I was born.

I come from a rich history of service and duty to our country. At a young age I learned about my grandfather’s service in World War II with the U.S. Navy. Years later, I saw my brother courageously deploy with the U.S. Air Force and proudly make me the sister of a U.S. serviceman.

Like many families in the Rio Grande Valley, my family’s history is rich, diverse, and marked by more than one culture. Here in South Texas, we celebrated Thanksgiving by cooking turkey, arroz and carne asada. And come Christmas Eve, we’ll attend posadas and make traditional family recipes; for me, that’s my abuela’s world-famous tamale recipe.

My family’s traditions are ones that so many others in South Texas share. They represent a blend of cultures that define every aspect of our community.

From attending the University of Texas at San Antonio to founding my small business in my hometown, I can confidently say I understand, love and value my community, which is why I decided to get into the political fight. I’ve seen year after year how out-of-touch representatives in Washington, D.C., create issues and support agendas that drastically affect the day-to-day lives of everyone from my family and friends to local store owners, farmers, ranchers, teachers, and everyone in between. Navy.

Representation has never been more important. We need leaders who will step up and put their constituents first. My family was able to achieve the American Dream and I believe that everyone deserves that same opportunity.

Since Joe Biden’s inauguration we have seen our border thrown wide open, our Border Patrol agents slandered and demoralized and our resources strained. Instead of taking action to protect our community, we have watched our country’s leaders throw South Texas to the side and prioritize an unsustainable, unpopular leftist agenda that has put our nation at risk.

We have endured enough. From skyrocketing inflation to a nationwide baby formula shortage, every Texan, no matter how small, has suffered this past year. We need real solutions to real problems and I’m ready to take up that fight.

But my commitment to you is not one of empty promises and false hope. It’s one of action and continuity because the issues affecting you not only affect me, but they affect my children, and nothing is more important to me.

I’m honored to be your future congresswoman and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share our diverse values and ideas with Washington D.C.

I invite each and every constituent of TX-15 to call, email and visit my offices in South Texas and in Washington, D.C. Complete with pan dulce, my door will always be open to you. Let’s get to work.

U.S. Rep.-elect Monica De La Cruz will represent Texas’ 15th Congressional District in the 118th Congressional Session.
