Letters: Essential programs

I wholeheartedly agree with Ned Sheats’ assessment of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s quote applying to Ms. Coronado: “The person who’s in love with their vision of community will destroy community. But the person who loves the people around them will create community everywhere they go” (Letters, June 28). We can now also include Ms. Bolin; together they assert that children should not be fed meals at school. Well, that’s just plain wrong in so many ways.

Children do not learn when they’re hungry. Hunger blocks the information signals to the brain and causes long-term learning impairment. Hungry children fall behind those from more fortunate households while the hungry students cause disturbances due to stress and shame and eventually drop out.

School meals encourage school attendance and programs have been established because of this. The National School Lunch Program established in 1946 provides nutritionally balanced low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. In 1966 the School Breakfast Program started and is designed for “nutritionally needy” children and received permanent authorization in 1975. Decades later, Congress authorized the reimbursement of snacks served to children enrolled in after-school programs. During the recent pandemic, every child could receive a free lunch, and more than 4.8 billion lunches were served to children country-wide.

So, we have two women questioning established social programs to provide food to hungry schoolchildren. Have they drunk the Kool-Aid of cruelty and callousness of the Republican Party, or is it just their perception as to what constitutes social program handouts?

But what would happen if their own Social Security (established 1935) and Medicare (established 1965) benefits are cut/eliminated? Would social programs become essential to them, then?

Biden’s

untruths

Honest Joe? Unite the country! Lie! I’m going to kick COVID’s butt! Lie! We will leave no American behind in Afghanistan! Lie! Capitol rioters killed five cops! Lie! Never spoke to Hunter about his business dealings abroad! Lie! Price of gas, Putin’s tax! Lie! “Zero” inflation in July! Lie! Build back better would be fully paid for! Lie! No one under $400,000 will pay taxes! Lie! Inflation was Trump’s fault! Lie! Inflation was transitory! Lie! Supply chain crisis is not that bad! Lie! We need to secure our borders! Lie, lie, lie!

Just a few fact-checked and documented untruths by Joe Biden as president! Imagine his entire career as a politician! Multiple degrees, top of his class!

I could go on and on!

I agree with Jake Longoria’s letter posted on Aug. 16. Some Americans (extreme leftists, Democrats) want the following:

1) Abortion should be legal in many stages of fetus development.

2) Compensation for years of slavery, although those wanting the money were never slaves.

3) Open borders and allow anyone to enter by the thousands with open hands demanding free money, housing, food, etc.

4) Cancelation of student debt, even though most students paid their way and will not be compensated.

5) “The welfare class” wish to remain unemployed and lazy.
