Letters: Lacking decency

Who knows what is to be the end of our two-party system? The current leaders of the Republican Party seem hell-bent on destroying the old white men’s party that we used to know! They are using deceit, lying, greed, hatred, obscuring and meanness to justify their destruction.

As an example, the Bible mentions slaves, slavery and bondage hundreds of times in its teachings. But what are the Republicans doing in our schools? They are saying our children cannot be taught what the Bible teaches so abundantly about slavery.

Our forefathers trapped men and women in the continent of Africa and brought them to the New World by ship in horrible conditions. Proud men and women of their tribes made into slaves and some of them so demeaned and mistreated they died en route to this land of freedom for white men.

Why are they disregarding the Bible? Are they saying the Bible is blasphemy? Matthew 7:15-16: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits.” These folks seem to be barren as a 90-year-old spinster!

Yet on the other side of the coin, they are subjecting our small defenseless children to a ghastly drill every week in preparation for a person with an AR-15 coming into their school and slaughtering everyone in sight! These children must be having nightmares every night after going through these drills. Don’t they have any decency?

Mandates

on masks

Around two years ago, there was a time when the COVID-19 pandemic had accumulated the highest numbers of cases and deaths worldwide. My heart and prayers will always go out to all the people who contracted the virus and to all others who lost their loved ones to it.

It was also a time when many of us blue-collar workers were put in a bind when all kinds of mask mandates were issued in the workplace. If any employee failed to follow that mandate anywhere in this country, that worker more than likely would get fired from his or her job, worker shortages notwithstanding.

In the Texas public school system two years ago, many supervisors from most, if not all, of those public schools had declared cloth masks to be off limits from campus. They claimed that cloth masks were not effective against the spread of the disease back then.

So when did cloth masks become a source of evil when we were trying to protect ourselves from COVID-19? Did any of those supervisors do their research on why cloth masks were bad for our health when the pandemic was present in the Valley?

Lack of proof would indicate otherwise.

There were many poor families who couldn’t afford to buy surgical masks for their children to bring to school at that time in history. Looking back at it now, I shudder to think what consequences those students would’ve faced if all they had were cloth masks. Is this what people call a war on poverty?

It also frightens me to think what would’ve happened to us blue-collar workers if any of us chose to wear our cloth masks for legitimate reasons in place of following a “mandate” that

didn’t make much of a difference during its brief existence.

People say a rose is a rose. I say a mask is simply a mask.

There’s no other way to it.

Even though most of the pandemic is behind us, I pray that our communities will return to complete normalcy once and for all.
