Letters: Holiday activity

This 4th of July, I would like to suggest an additional activity to the wonderful celebration that the city of McAllen provides every year. Take your family or friends to the Veterans War Memorial of Texas, just east of the Convention Center and begin at the beautiful Plaza of Liberty site on the south side of the complex.

Read the information on the walls to remind yourself and especially our children and grandchildren how and why we became the greatest country in the world and why we still celebrate our independence and freedom after 246 years.

Patriotism is not inherited but must be taught to every generation so the tremendous sacrifices of all the generations from the beginning of our history to the present day are never forgotten. I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable 4th of July and may God continue to bless America.

U.S.-loving

Americans

Mrs. Imelda Coronado wrote a letter about what U.S.-loving Americans shouldn’t do. Yet she left out the most important thing. What U.S lovers shouldn’t do is try to overthrow the U.S. government by trying to stop the peaceful transfer of power. That is what you left out, Mrs. Coronado.

Also, what U.S. lovers should not do is defend or support an insurrecting ex-president who is spinning a big lie about a stolen election. That, Mrs. Coronado, is what U.S.-loving people shouldn’t do. They also shouldn’t be so easy to manipulate in believing everything that a spoiled loser tells them.

Guns

kill

The excuse has been made that people kill people. That guns don’t kill people. After Democratic President Bill Clinton signed a bill banning assault-type weapons in 1994, mass shooting deaths dropped 43%. In 2004 after the Republican-lead Congress let the bill expire, mass shootings rose up 239%. Yes, 239%.

And the argument still is that people kill people. This wrong statement has been brought up by Republicans. Let’s arm teachers, they say. Better yet, let’s ban assault style weapons.

Who needs to own an assault-type weapon? A weapon that can shoot more than 130 rounds a minute? Assault weapons are good for one thing and one thing only: to kill people.

And this has been going on for a long time. Here is a small list of mass murders committed with the use of an assault-type weapon.

(1) March 24, 1998, WestsideMiddle School, JonesboroArk., 5 dead. (2) April 20, 1999, ColumbineHigh School, 13 dead. (3) April 16, 2007, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., 32 dead. (4) July 20, 2012, Aurora Colo., Century 16 movie theater, 12 dead. (5) Dec. 14, 2012, NewtonElementary School, Newton, Conn., 27 dead, mostly 6-7-year-old children. (6) Dec. 02, 2015, San Bernardino, Calif., 14 dead. (7) Oct. 01, 2017, Las Vegas, music festival, 60 dead. (8) March 6, 2019, StonemanDouglasHigh School, Parkland, Fla., 17 dead. (9) Aug. 3, 2019, Walmart, El Paso, 23 dead. (10) May 14, 2022, Tops Supermarket, Buffalo, N.Y., 10 dead. (11) May 24, 2022, Robb Elementary, Uvalde, 21 dead.

People, when are we going to come to our senses? Enough is enough. Guns kill people. Go tell your congressman. The laws must be changed or this will continue. The lives of our children are in your hands.

Gender laws

will be costly

“Elections have consequences” — a quote made famous by former president Barack Obama! I heard about it June 2, it got verified the next day!

States that attempt to legislate against federal gender identity policy will lose their National School Lunch, school breakfast and school supper federal funding!

Yep! What you hold most dear to you are not so dear to Biden and company! What kind of heathens did you all elect?

How dare they threaten our children? If things aren’t bad enough today, our children are now targets by this administration!

Well! Now you know what we truly have before us! Wow!

Abortion

and guns

Seen on the internet, author unknown:

“How about we treat every young man who wants to buy a gun like every woman, young or otherwise, who wants to get an abortion in many states: Impose mandatory 48 hr. waiting period; if too young, obtain written permission from parent or judge; get letter from doctor proving he understands what he is about to do; make him watch video about the effects of gun violence.

“Let’s close down all but one gun shop in every state, possibly making him travel hundreds of miles, take time off work, and stay overnight in a strange town to get that gun. Then make him walk through a gauntlet of people holding bloody photos of loved ones who were shot to death, who call him a murderer and beg him not to buy a gun.

“It makes more sense to do this with young men and guns than with women and reproductive health care. No woman getting an abortion has ever killed a room full of people in seconds, right?”
