Letters: Partisan visit not welcome

Dear McAllen Mayor and City Commission,

I am writing on behalf of our community. The city recently hosted a partisan Republican delegation to discuss Title 42 in McAllen. As you well know, we are all concerned about the lifting of Title 42. In fact, our South Texas congressional and state delegation along with local officials have been very vocal on this issue.

The concern is that this delegation was not here to solve any of our problems. In fact, not one of these members is in any leadership position that could help in anyway. Not one Texas member of Congress was invited. And most of their districts are very far from our border.

It’s clear that they were only here for their own political agenda. And the city of McAllen and the Rio GrandeValley are only being used for their upcoming elections. The city should not host a partisan event of this kind. This event would did not benefit us in any way and will bring no real benefits to addressing a solution.

A partisan event of this type would only assist in tarnishing the image our beautiful region and its people. The people of McAllen and the Rio GrandeValley did not deserve this. However, if you’d like to host a bipartisan delegation we would be more than glad to assist and participate.

The city of McAllen has always prided itself for being non-partisan and we hope to keep it that way.

My faith in Americans is being reduced every day by reading the newspapers and watching TV daily!

The nutty governor in Florida is promoting the idea that every resident of Florida can openly carry lethal weapons capable of killing dozens of people in a matter of seconds. He is driving businesses from his state due to his petty peeve over a business criticizing his perverted beliefs on gay people.

The Taliban has made a complete fool of Donald Trump in their deal with him to leave Afghanistan. They told him girls would be able to be educated, they told him women would have equal rights, they told him they would work with the elected people of government and on and on. None of those things have happened and now I learn the fentanyl production is their No. 1 money export, even surpassing opium.

People who do not believe in our democracy are running for office in local, state and national elections and winning in certain areas of America! Why are our people so easily fooled? Why do they fall for this cult mentality? Why lies are so easily repeated so many times that they are believed to be facts? Why is that senator from Florida promoting an income tax on poor people, abolishing Social Security, abolishing Medicare and getting praise from his fellow Republicans in Congress? Why is the Russian invasion of Ukraine getting praise from our past president? Why does the figure of 1 million deaths due to COVID in America not get blaring headlines in all news outlets? Why does the fact of women in America being made second-class citizens not inflame all women of America? Why does a frequent letter writer to The Monitor call the political opposition names and degrade them but now cannot accept a little criticism for the same treatment?

May God help America to wake up and live up to God’s expectations.
